Register as a Jersey resident

One of the first things you need to do when you arrive in Jersey is register at the Customer and Local Services department. You’ll be given a Social Security number and a registration card confirming your residential status. Your details will also be shared with the following departments:

If you’re moving over with school age children, Customer and Local Services will also let the Education Department know you're in the island. This is to safeguard children and make sure they're in school, which is required by law.

Every person age 16 and over must register themselves. You can’t register for someone on their behalf except for dependent children under 16.

What you need to tell us

We’ll ask you a number of questions, including:

A registration card costs £80 and you will need to pay for this online before the process is completed.

Registering for tax

You register for tax at the same time as you register for social security and get your registration card.

If you’re employed, you’ll receive an income tax instalment scheme (ITIS) rate by post from Revenue Jersey. This is the percentage of your income that you will be deducted each time you’re paid.

If you’re still looking for work when you register, you’ll need to tell Revenue Jersey when you know how much you're going to be paid. You will then be sent your ITIS rate.

How your personal information will be used

Information you provide about yourself when registering as a new resident, or at a later stage, such as your name, date of birth and your address, will be securely shared with other Government of Jersey departments, so that we can improve the services we provide for you.

We'll only share your information as required to provide, or in preparation to provide, you with our services.

Your information may also be used for statistical purposes to support planning for our services. In this case, all information capable of identifying you will be removed from the data before it's shared.
