Exercise 1 

1. Do you think Sara will turn up at the pub tonight? 

2. Can you look through these documents for me? I need you to check for any mistakes. 

3. I hear that there’s been a break out of bird flu in Thailand. 

4. You have the patience of an angel to put up with James, he can be a real pain. 

5. How long do you think it’ll take you to get over your girlfriend? You went out together for a long time. 

6. Have you heard about the corporate take over of IBM by Microsoft? 

7. I hear Robert had a break down. He was under such a lot of stress at work, and then his wife left him. 

8. Does this blouse go with this skirt? 

9. I’m usually so exhausted, so it usually only takes me a few minutes to drop off at night. 

10. Do you think they’ll bring back the death penalty? I hear that they might in parliament. 

11. Maybe we should turn back. We’ve been driving down this road for half an hour and we still haven’t seen any signs. 

12. Have you noticed Jane’s put on a lot of weight recently? She’s getting quite plump. 

13. Do you think house prices will go up? I hope not, they’re so high already.

9. When is Madonna bringing out her new CD? (releasing) 

10. I heard Joe and Tiffany are breaking up. (ending their relationship) 

11. What time do you want to go out tonight? (to do something outside the house, e.g. cinema, bar, nightclub…) 

12. It’s difficult to get by on just HK $8000 a month. (to live e.g. pay for rent, bills, food…) 

13. John turned down that really well-paying job, they wanted him to work too many hours. (to say no to) 

14. He was too shy to go over and talk to the girl he fancied. (approach, and talk to walk up to)
